BIO

Born in Wales, Vincent Godfrey (BMus, MMus and current PhD student) is a conductor whose work spans professional orchestras, youth ensembles, community music-making, and academic research. Increasingly in demand both in the UK and internationally, he is recognised for his energetic musicianship, collaborative approach, and commitment to musical excellence at every level of performance.

Vincent began playing the clarinet at the age of seven and, following work experience with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, decided to pursue a career in music. After establishing himself as a freelance woodwind player—with performances at Carnegie Hall, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and major venues across Europe—his growing passion for conducting led him to focus increasingly on the podium.

Recent professional engagements have included conducting the Budapest Film Orchestra in Hungary and the Merlyn Ensemble in London, including the debut performance of Odaline de la Martinez's Scenes from Imoinda at The Warehouse.

A passionate advocate for music education, Vincent has worked extensively with youth ensembles including the West Sussex Youth Orchestra and Wind Orchestra, Chichester Youth Orchestra, and TOPs Orchestra. He has led international tours to Germany and France and conducted the West Sussex County Youth Orchestra at Birmingham Symphony Hall. He currently teaches at Collyer's College in Horsham, where he conducts the Sinfonia Orchestra.

Alongside his educational work, Vincent is active within the community music sector. He founded (and conducts) the Godalming Orchestra in 2019 and has guest conducted a variety of ensembles including H2O (Horsham Second Orchestra), Horsham Symphony Orchestra, and the Haslemere Musical Society.

Vincent is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Surrey, supervised by Dr Chris Wiley. His research explores the portrayal of conductors in film, bringing together his interests in conducting, performance, and screen culture.
